Logging to end in Tas world heritage area

All logging in a Tasmanian world heritage area will stop after the Tasmanian and federal governments promised to comply with United Nations recommendations to conserve the area.

The joint decision was made after the UN Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area report recommended a ban on the logging of special species of trees such as Blackwood, Silver Wattle and Huon Pine covering 1.6 million hectares in the state's south west.

Both governments have agreed to adopt 20 recommendations in the report, including responsible tourism and clear access for indigenous groups.
