LNP knocks back Ian Macfarlane's attempt to defect from the Liberal Party to the Nationals

The LNP said it will not be supporting Ian Macfarlane's intention to move to the National Party Room in Canberra, citing it was not in "the best interests of the LNP in Queensland".

"While LNP members of the Groom electorate voted to support Mr Macfarlane's decision, the interests of our party beyond his electorate were taken into account," LNP President Gary Spence said.

The former federal minister met with the LNP executive in Brisbane today.

Mr Macfarlane emerged a short time ago after to explain he had met with LNP President Gary Spence and accepted the decision.

"Today the LNP have made a decision. Obviously I'm disappointed with that decision but I accept it entirely," he said.

The one-time resources minister said he felt he had more to offer regional Queensland and Australia but his was "not the view of the LNP".

He said he hadn't spoken to the executive, only the president, with reasons for the rejection expected to be explained later in the afternoon.

He dismissed the suggestion he had miscalculated the party room jump.

"I felt that this was the only way I'd be able to continue to be an effective voice in my electorate and in regional Queensland," he said.
