LNP again smashing glass ceiling: PM

Tony Abbott is far from embarrassed the Liberal National Party is using an exclusive men-only club in Brisbane to host an International Women's Day event.

Instead, the prime minister praised his side for breaking through another glass ceiling for women.

"Thank God that bastion of old-fashioned chauvinism has finally collapsed like the walls of Jericho at the trumpet cry of the Liberal and National Party," Mr Abbott proclaimed in parliament on Wednesday, prompting howls of support from government MPs.

He was responding to Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, who wanted to know whether the prime minister supported the event being held at a club that restricted access to women.

"This is just how wonderful this broad church that I lead is," Mr Abbott said.

Despite his own cabinet having only two women, the event showed the LNP was smashing the glass ceiling "yet again".

"Good on you!"

Former Queensland Speaker Fiona Simpson and Nationals federal president Christine Ferguson are listed as guest speakers, as is Lyn Truss, the wife of Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss, for the Friday function.
