'Britain is back': UK Prime Minister David Cameron calls for Aussie investment in Sydney ahead of G20

UK Prime Minister David Cameron put out the call for Australian investors to bring their money and expertise to a resurgent Britain, during a business breakfast in Sydney.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and NSW Premier Mike Baird also spoke at the breakfast, which took place as part of Mr Cameron’s whirlwind visit to Sydney ahead of the G20 in Brisbane.

“Be in no doubt that after some difficult years, Britain is back,” Mr Cameron said.

He said the economy was rising faster than other G7 countries, resulting in a job growth rate that was the envy of the European Union.

“The absolute key to economic recovery is in infrastructure development,” he said.

Mr Cameron spoke of the UK government’s projects including high-speed rail linking the country – which he claimed was the biggest rail project Britain had seen since the 19^th-century reign of Queen Victoria.

The key for Australian businesses, he said, was that the government believed such projects would be best served by “massive amounts” of overseas investment.

He said the government was not embarrassed about being so open to foreign development.

“As well as welcoming the investment, frankly, we welcome the expertise,” he said.

“Look at Britain, look at investing in Britain, bring your infrastructure expertise and you won’t be disappointed.”

Mr Cameron will later address Parliament before travelling to Brisbane to take his place among other world leaders at the G20.

Before the business breakfast, the he and Mr Abbott spent several minutes taking in the harbour views outside the Opera House on a sunny Sydney morning ahead of the G20 Summit in Brisbane this weekend.

Police lined the streets and over a dozen security personnel flanked the pair as they made their way to and from Circular Quay.

Mr Cameron said Sydney was "such a beautiful city". 

"I've never been to Sydney before. You've laid on some un-English weather for me."

Mr Abbott said it was "terrific" to have taken in Sydney's sights with his British counterpart.
