Multimillion-dollar North Adelaide redevelopment in spotlight after LIV Golf hosting extension

Residents in North Adelaide are supporting the multimillion-dollar redevelopment plans after the state government secured LIV Golf hosting rights into the 2030s, but have a list of non-negotiables for the project to go ahead.

After this weekend's event attracted a record 102,483 fans to Grange Golf Club, attention has shifted to the fairways of North Adelaide, the new home for the tournament from 2028, although the state government will need a backup plan if it isn't finished a year earlier.

"It will absolutely be done by 2028, there's an outside chance it'll be done by 2027," South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas said.

In a letter to members, Grange Golf Club says it has not been approached to host beyond 2026.

If there is an offer to extend the event it would require the agreement of members.

While North Adelaide residents have expressed support for the redevelopment, they have put forward some non-negotiables.

"I think one big non-negotiable would be no fences in the parklands… availability to the public, the keeping of the mature trees," local Anne Moran said.

"Public space belongs to every South Australian, not to commercial golf operators, not to buildings which might restrict access to your parklands," an Adelaide Park Lands Association spokesperson said.

The local council says it will meet for further discussions with Malinauskas in the next week.
