Lisa Wilkinson discovers more about fallen relative on 100 year anniversary of WWI

TODAY’s Lisa Wilkinson has discovered more about her family’s link to World War I, as the 100 year anniversary is commemorated around the world.

Lisa visited the Australian War Memorial in Canberra this morning after finding her great-uncle’s name on the Roll of Honour on ANZAC Day earlier this year.

The Roll of Honour contains the names of 102,000 Australians who have been lost in war over the past 100 years.

“To be down there and possibly find that there is a familial link is pretty special,” she said.

Today she learned her relative may have died in Gallipoli.

“I’ve gone onto the War Memorial website and found a whole lot of detail (about my ancestor) I previously was unaware of.

“I think I may have found out that my grandmother’s brother was lost at Gallipoli and buried at Lone Pine, so it’s my mission now to find out if that’s the case,” she said.

Lisa praised the War Memorial’s digital archive, labelling it “an absolute treasure chest of information”.

“That’s the great thing about the War Memorial is that you can get information that was previously really buried to all of us.”

An exhibition, ANZAC Voices, is currently on display at the War Memorial.

A Last Post ceremony will be held at the War Memorial this afternoon, where all the names of those who were lost in WWI will be projected onto a wall outside the Hall of Memory.
