Lightning strike causes mayhem on busy Sydney road

Two Sydney drivers are lucky to be alive after a lightning strike smashed a tree next to a main road causing it to crash into the path of oncoming traffic.

YouTube user Uma Pekkanen captured the frightening moment on her dashcam as she was driving along Lane Cove Road in Ryde early on Saturday afternoon.

The strike split the large tree in half, sending it crashing to the bitumen where it happened to fall between two drivers.

"Wow, s—t! Oh my god! That just scared the s—t out of me!", a female passenger is heard exclaiming.

Fellow drivers can be seen rushing to help and ambulance arrives soon after.

It is unknown whether the drivers suffered any injuries.

The wild weather that has wreaked havoc across Sydney and eastern New South Wales for the past week is expected to continue over the coming days.

SES and NSW Rural Fire Service crews will remain mobilised until at least Thursday, the ABC reports.
