Footage shows close calls as people risk life and limb with light rail

Footage has emerged showing the life-endangering risks people are taking with the Sydney light rail — and they don't always come off best.

One video shows a cyclist veer onto the Central Station tracks while trying to duck across Eddy Avenue but instead, gets hit by the incoming tram.

Luckily, the rider was unhurt, but they aren't the only ones to have risked life and limb around the new tracks this year.

"We still see people doing the most ridiculous things around a tram network," Howard Collins from Transport for NSW said.

From food delivery drivers rushing to make a deadline, to pedestrians with their headphones in, many have been lucky not to be cleaned up by the oncoming trams.

"Get those headphones out of your ears, stop looking at your mobile phone," Mr Collins said.

Another problem is people running the gauntlet, trying to make the crossing before the tram starts moving.

There have been about two near misses with pedestrians every week since the light rail opened 12 months ago, and about 25 collisions with pedestrians, vehicles and cyclists.

"They're big vehicles, they are pretty quiet — but please, pay attention," Mr Collins said.
