Liberal senator calling for changes to freedom of speech laws

Senator Cory Bernardi has reignited debate over whether to change race hate laws to allow more free speech, but the federal government says it will not budge.

The controversial Liberal senator is attempting to force a Cabinet rethink of Prime Minister Tony Abbott's decision last year to dump planned changes to the Racial Discrimination Act.

"I don't believe that any religion, or any political ideology, or any ideas in this country could be off limits for discussion simply because one group of individuals is going to threaten us with violence," he said.

Senator Bernardi said Australians should not be bullied into remaining silent on issues that may offend.

"We should be offended by people rioting in the streets, causing damage, killing other individuals simply because they don't like what we've had to say," he said.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has accused Senator Bernardi of using the recent tragedy in France for cheap political purposes, labelling it "disgraceful and pathetic".

"You don't fight hate with hate," he said.

Acting Prime Minister Warren Truss said the race hate laws will not be changed.
