Liam Jurrah jailed for assault

Former AFL player Liam Jurrah has been jailed for at least three months for assaulting his wife.

The 25-year-old former Melbourne forward pleaded guilty on Thursday at the Alice Springs Magistrates Court to two counts of aggravated assault, breaching a domestic violence order and driving while disqualified in another state.

He will serve at least three months of a five-month sentence, and was fined $450 for breaching his DVO and $550 for his driving offence.

Jurrah got into a fight with his wife while drinking to celebrate victory in a local football grand final late last month and kicked down a door, punching her in the face and kicking her while she lay on the ground.

He was jailed for three months last year for a similar offence in Alice Springs, assaulting a woman who threw a rock at his car.

Jurrah was also involved in a high speed chase with police in December during which he was clocked doing 140km/h in a 100-kilometre zone as a disqualified driver.

Jurrah is required to enter into an alcohol rehabilitation program.

Once the program is completed, he is banned from entering Alice Springs without the permission of a probation officer for a 12-month period.

Jurrah is also not permitted to drink while on probation.

He will be eligible for release on July 21.
