Resident escapes destructive house fire north of Adelaide

A home in Lewiston, north of Adelaide, has been destroyed by a fire that erupted early this morning. 

Emergency services were called to the Dawkins Road property just before 4:30am, and were confronted by intense flames. 

"It was really intense at the time, the crews were luckily able to save the shed and also its possessions and the car," Country Fire Service spokesperson Tanya Kuiper said.

The occupant of the house managed to escape before firefighters arrived.

"Originally crews thought he might have been and neighbours thought he might have been inside," Kuiper said.

Police took the man from the property for assessment by paramedics. He was then treated at the scene before being transported to hospital.

The house, though, couldn't be saved from the fierce fire, with the damage bill estimated to be around $150,000.

Police and fire investigators are working to determine the circumstances that led to the blaze.
