Leaders to join against violence on women

Police chiefs and political leaders are banding together in the name of ending male violence against women.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, Governor-General Peter Cosgrove and state and territory police chiefs will attend a White Ribbon Day breakfast at Parliament House in Canberra on Monday.

It's part of a male-led national campaign to raise awareness about domestic violence, sexual abuse and other types of harassment women face.

On average, one Australian woman is killed every week by a current or former partner.

Australia's ambassador for women and girls, Natasha Stott Despoja, will also participate.

White Ribbon Day is Tuesday.
