Australia's crime commission is getting a slight refresh to its underpinning laws to remain on the front-foot of technology-savvy criminal syndicates.

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton said the draft laws wouldn't expand the commission's powers, but instead makes authorising investigations easier.

"(The bill) will ensure the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission can continue to effectively detect, prevent and disrupt the nefarious activities of serious and organised crime targets," he told parliament on Thursday when introducing the legislation.
