'I just want my baby back': Melbourne mum grieves her dead toddler

A Melbourne mum says she just wants her dead toddler back, as the man who allegedly murdered the little boy nicknamed Snuffles chose not to face court.

Brendan Pallant, 32, did not appear before Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday after being charged with murdering two-year-old Jaidyn Gomes.

The toddler died at a home in Langwarrin on Monday afternoon.

Paramedics were unable to revive him when they were called to the home following reports he was injured.

Under instruction from his lawyer Grace Donohoe, Pallant stayed in the cells during the brief procedural hearing. 

She did not apply for bail and he was remanded in custody until a committal mention on January 22.

Ms Donohoe said her client had been seen by a nurse and had no issues in custody. 

It is understood Jaidyn lived with his mother Stacie Saggers, 34, who was widowed after her partner Christopher Gomes died in November.

She was also arrested on Monday but later released without charge. Police believe she was not involved in the incident.

"I miss him so much. I just want my baby back," a devastated Ms Saggers told reporters outside her home.

She said Jaidyn would be remembered "as our little Snuffles", who liked "playing with his brother, spending time with me, hugging me".

On social media, Ms Saggers said she was at work when her son was allegedly murdered.

Others who knew the family have posted tributes to the little boy.

"Only the good die young RIP Chris and Jaidyn Gomes," Fabian Pacey said.

"Rest easy little one gone but never forgotten your with daddy now Christopher Gomes he will look after you both missed and will never be forgotten fly high and rest easy," Mitch Argentaro said.

Neighbors heard screaming

Neighbours had heard screaming between a man and a woman before authorities arrived on Monday afternoon.

Jaidyn's grandmother told reporters outside the Potts Road home yesterday that her daughter had moved back to Victoria from Queensland after losing her partner, the toddler's father, to a motorcycle accident.

The grandmother - who asked not to be named - said she last saw Jaidyn "about three weeks ago".

She said her young grandson was "full of cuddles" and loved playing with trucks.

His mother, she said, was doing casual cleaning work "for a little bit of extra money".
