Jacqui Lambie sets up own political party

Jacqui Lambie is setting up her own political party to highlight Tasmanian issues on the national stage.

The independent senator, previously a member of the Palmer United Party, has applied to the Australian Electoral Commission to register the Jacqui Lambie Network.

Its objectives are to elect people to the federal and Tasmanian parliaments, represent Tasmanians, raise awareness of Tasmanian issues and push for changes to electoral laws to give more information about who candidates are affiliated with.

Ms Lambie has called for people who would like to be part of her network to make contact through her Facebook page.

“Once the Australian Electoral Commission has officially processed and cleared the Network’s registration – just like other major political parties, the Network will be able to field senate and lower house candidates in future federal elections," Ms Lambie said in a statement.

"And just like other political parties, the people of Tasmania and other states will have the option of voting above the line when they mark their ballot papers, should they want to choose the candidates I endorse.”

If Senator Lambie later quits her own party, a clause in the constitution requires its management to immediately remove her name from the party's title.
