Lambie eyes crowdfunding campaign funds

Independent senator Jacqui Lambie is turning to crowdfunding for her election campaign.

Senator Lambie will face the voters in Tasmania if there is a double-dissolution election on July 2, but would ordinarily not return to the polls until 2019.

The former Palmer United Party senator told AAP she was working hard to get re-elected but understood she would need money to campaign.

"We'll do some crowd funding... there's letters going out this week to a lot of businesses around Australia, a lot of supporters," she said.

"But I'm going to keep doing what I've been doing for the last two years - working my butt off and getting out there and getting the job done."

Crowdfunding involves going online to seek small pledges from a large pool of people.

US President Barack Obama was a pioneer of crowdfunding, with an estimated 80 per cent of his money coming from donations of $20 or less.

Senator Lambie won just under 6.6 per cent of the primary vote in 2013, but achieved her seat on preferences.
