Lambie declares she wants to be PM

Clive Palmer's grand plan to become prime minister could be thwarted by one of his own.

New Palmer United Party senator Jacqui Lambie has declared her "absolute" intention to nab the country's top job.

"You don't get into politics if you don't want to go all the way," she told the Nine Network on Friday.

"And if you don't have those aspirations, then maybe you shouldn't be here in the first place."

Senator Lambie takes her place in the Senate chamber next week, alongside PUP colleagues Glenn Lazarus and Dio Wang.

Along with Ricky Muir from the Motoring Enthusiast Party, the quartet will share the balance of power.

Senator Lambie's says her inspiration is former UK prime minister Margaret Thatcher, who she credits with common sense, brains and the ability to stand her ground.

Mr Palmer, a billionaire MP, has also said he wants to be prime minister.
