Labor urges govt to split media reforms

Labor is urging the government to split its media ownership reforms package if it wants the changes to clear parliament before Christmas.
The opposition supports scrapping the so-called reach rule, which prohibits a company from controlling commercial TV licences which reach more than 75 per cent of the population, but opposes changing the two-out-of-three rule which prevents a proprietor from controlling more than two of three radio, TV and newspapers in one area.
"They could have (the 75 per cent reach rule) through by Christmas and that would be a great thing for regional broadcasters," the party's regional communications spokesman Stephen Jones told Sky News on Thursday.
