Federal Labor will oppose a $5 hike in the departure tax paid by passengers at airports following an outcry from the tourism industry.

The federal government announced it would take the passenger movement charge to $60, to help pay for the changes to its backpacker tax arrangements.

Labor tourism spokesman Anthony Albanese said in a statement on Wednesday the tax hike was bad policy created on the run without economic modelling or consultation.
