Labor supporter hands Shorten $100

Labor man Ray Hill is a big fan of the party's leader Bill Shorten.

So much so he dropped by the opposition leader's press conference on Friday to give him a gift - $100.

"That's ok mate, no. You don't have to," Mr Shorten insisted.

But the 78-year-old wasn't taking no for an answer.

So he did as Mr Shorten suggested and gave the cash instead to Brian Mitchell, Labor's candidate for the Tasmanian electorate of Lyons.

Staff made sure they quickly took down Mr Hill's details for a receipt.

Mr Hill said he decided to come down after hearing Mr Shorten would be holding a press conference at Hobart's Sandy Bay.

He brought along a copy of the book True Believers, about the Labor party's history, to get Mr Shorten's autograph.

He's worked on Labor campaigns in the past and remains a "real strong" supporter.

"I reckon he's done a wonderful job," Mr Hill later told reporters.

"He's lead the way."

Mr Shorten signed his name beneath the signature of Australia's first female prime minister Julia Gillard.
