Labor proposes to criminalise revenge porn

The federal opposition has made a second attempt in a year to criminalise revenge porn.

Labor MP Tim Watts on Monday introduced a private member's bill that proposed three new offences around the sharing of private sexual images and film without a person's consent.

Mr Watts criticised the government for failing to introduce its own legislation, noting that the Australian Federal Police, the Commonwealth Department of Public Prosecutions and COAG had all indicated their support for federal law.

Attorney General George Brandis told a Senate estimates hearing in Canberra that revenge porn was a matter for state and territory authorities.
