Labor MP hospitalised after serious car crash

Labor MP Ed Husic has been hospitalised with serious injuries after his car was struck by a truck on a Sydney motorway.

He was travelling home after speaking with constituents in his Western Sydney electorate of Chifley about 6.20pm on Tuesday when his Tesla was struck by a truck on the M7.

“According to the attending paramedics’ report, Mr Husic’s vehicle was impacted by a truck from behind and slightly to the right of the rivers’ side while travelling at approximately 80km/h,” a statement from Husic’s office read.

Husic was rushed to hospital with a concussion, fractures and minor abrasions and kept overnight.

He was discharged the following day but will take a short period of leave from parliamentary duties while he recovers.

His office said he was not at fault in the crash and is providing a statement to police.

Husic was extremely grateful to walk away from the accident without more serious injury.

“Mr Husic thanked the doctors, nurses and paramedics at Westmead Hospital for providing him with outstanding care and thanked his family and friends for their support, especially during his hospital stay,” the statement read.

“He said he looked forward to returning to full parliamentary duties shortly and assured constituents his electorate team would continue to support the people of Chifley in the meantime.”

Husic, the former industry and science minister, was elected in 2010 and lost his portfolio in a cabinet reshuffle after a factional fight last year.
