A Labor government would invest $20 million in the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute to boost research into advanced breast cancer and brain cancer.

"Australia's next big medical breakthrough is dependent on giving our world-class researchers the resources and support they need," Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said in a statement on Sunday.

Mr Shorten will join the singer on her 'wellness walk and research run' in Melbourne on Sunday, along with Labor's health spokeswoman Catherine King and social services spokeswoman Jenny Macklin.
