Labor gives red light to green law changes

Labor has formally agreed to oppose changes to federal environment laws which would block so-called green vigilante court action against major projects.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott says mines and other job-creating projects are being stalled by court action brought by people and groups not directly affected by the projects.

The Labor caucus agreed on Tuesday to oppose the changes, saying it would disempower environmental and farming groups.

Meanwhile a committee headed by a Liberal MP has raised human rights concerns about the proposed changes.

Parliament's human rights committee says the legislation may limit the right to a healthy environment.

The committee, chaired by former minister Philip Ruddock, wants an explanation from Environment Minister Greg Hunt as to whether the bill's end justifies the means.
