Labor criticises Treasury reappointments

Labor has criticised government plans to reappoint senior Treasury officials as the prospect of a double dissolution election looms.

Shadow treasurer Chris Bowen says a decision to announce a reappointment process for the chairman of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is "highly inappropriate".

The term of current chairman Rod Sims expires on July 31, though he is expected to be reappointed from August 1.

"This date is, of course, after the next government is likely to have been sworn in," Mr Bowen said in reference to the prospect of a July 2 double dissolution.

"The government should not be making appointments or reappointments for Treasury portfolio agencies that expire during or after the election period without consultation with the opposition," he said.

Mr Bowen said the same should also apply to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission chairman role, which expires on May 12.
