Labor calls for openness on religion bill

Labor has called on the Morrison government to release thousands of public submissions on its draft religious discrimination laws.

The government has so far released about 100 submissions, but the attorney-general's department website says 6000 were received.

"We will publish further submissions progressively over time, but note that given the volume received, not all submissions will be published," the website states.

Shadow attorney-general Mark Dreyfus has written to Attorney-General Christian Porter urging him to release the remaining submissions.

"This is concerning. It is important that every Australian who wishes to contribute to this debate be respected and listened to," Mr Dreyfus said in the letter.

"Moreover, the public debate in respect of the new exposure drafts will be assisted and enriched by the submissions in respect of the original exposure drafts being made public."

Prime Minister Scott Morrison this week released a second version of the bill for public comment, following concerns the initial bill did not offer enough protections to religious organisations.

Mr Dreyfus said submissions on the second bill should also be published as soon as practicable.
