Labor asks coalition to back Rudd UN bid
Labor has urged the government to give bipartisan support for Kevin Rudd to run for United Nations secretary-general without actually mentioning the former party leader's name.
Labor foreign affairs spokeswoman Tanya Plibersek asked Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in parliament on Monday whether he would support "an Australian candidate" for the prestigious international role.
"In the event of this matter becoming a live one, then certainly the cabinet will consider it and give it due attention," Mr Turnbull said.
Earlier, Ms Plibersek endorsed Mr Rudd for the job, saying he had experience not only as prime minister but foreign minister.
"You cannot think of a better qualified person for the position," she told parliament.
"Always back the Aussie."
