A young boy is in a critical condition with a suspected fractured skull after a playground accident northwest of Sydney. CareFlight

A young boy is in a critical condition with a suspected fractured skull after a playground accident northwest of Sydney.

The eight-year-old was playing at a Kurrajong school this afternoon when he is believed to have fallen off equipment and hit his head on a brick wall.

Emergency crews arrived at 3.40pm and treated the boy, who was dropping in and out of consciousness, according to ambulance personnel.

The boy was placed in an induced coma and flown to Westmead Children's Hospital. CareFlight

NSW Ambulance officers, the CareFlight Rapid Response helicopter and critical care paramedics treated the boy at the scene before he was placed in an induced coma.

He was airlifted to Westmead Children's Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
