Sea of pink as hundreds farewell Kumanjayi Little Baby

Hundreds of people have turned out to farewell Kumanjayi Little Baby in the Northern Territory, months after her death.

Mourners wore pink and dressed in t-shirts featuring the five-year-old’s face as they gathered at Alice Springs Garden Cemetery on Saturday.

Her death in April was met with an outpouring of grief from across Australia.

Her body was discovered near Old Timers Camp, south of Alice Springs, after a five-day search.

The five-year-old was allegedly murdered by Jefferson Lewis, a man not believed to be known to the girl or her family.

Speaking to mourners, Kumanjayi Little Baby’s mother Jacinta Roy urged the community to remember her daughter for who she was.

She said her daughter loved the colour pink, cuddling puppies and playing games on her mother’s phone.

She also loved watching cartoons including Masha and the Bear and Bluey.

“As a mother, my heart breaks into a million pieces, I miss her,” she said.

The five-year-old’s grandfather, Robin Japanangka Granites, acknowledged the community’s grief as he opened the funeral.

“You come because you are one of our family,” he said.

“You are from here, and we need you because we both cried at that same time.”
