Koala laps up water in scorching Adelaide heat

A koala has quenched his thirst with a refreshing drink of water as temperatures soar in Adelaide.

Local man Drew Russell, 31, told 9news.com.au the cuddly marsupial was a "regular visitor" to his home in Glenalta, 14kms from Adelaide’s CBD.

"We’ve had this house for about five years… whenever the weather gets warm, he comes and visits," Mr Russel said.

Video captured by Mr Russel shows the koala lapping up the water from the plastic container while lounging about on "his favourite part of the tree".

Today’s sizzling temperatures, which soared to an average of 30 degrees across the state and triggered fire bans, were a magnet for the thirsty animal.

Mr Russel said he held the water trough out for "at least half an hour".

"He was definitely very appreciative," Mr Russel said.   

"My arms are a little sore now though," he added with a laugh.
