Kings Cross transport trial for Saturdays

Bayswater Road in Kings Cross will become a bus and taxi only zone for the next three Saturday nights, in a move to improve safety and reduce traffic congestion after dark.

Private vehicles will be banned from driving on Bayswater Road between Darlinghurst Road and Ward Avenue from 9pm to 6am during the trial that kicks-off on Saturday.

"Sydney's late-night precincts face a variety of complex challenges, and the City is committed to taking action wherever we can," the Lord Mayor Clover Moore said in a statement on Monday.

The aim of the trial is to reduce waiting times for taxis and public transport.

The trial is being implemented by the City and NSW Government agencies along with NSW Police, Transport for NSW and the NSW Taxi Council.

"(It will) make it easier for people to get home at the end of their night," Sydney City Council's Kate O'Conner told Macquarie Radio on Monday.

The NSW Government and police are hoping new anti-violence laws will stop alcohol-fuelled violence in Kings Cross and Sydney's CBD.

The measures follow public outrage over the rise of serious drunken assaults in Sydney, including the fatal one-punch assaults on 18-year-olds Thomas Kelly and Daniel Christie in Kings Cross.
