Passengers evacuated after train collides with truck on Princes Highway in regional Victoria

An investigation is under way after a V-line train carrying up to 50 passengers and a truck collided on the Princes Highway in Victoria's east this morning.

Police were told that a trailer carrying an excavator was being towed by a truck when the trailer collided with an oncoming train about 10.10am near Kilmany in the Gippsland region.

The train and truck drivers both escaped serious injury.

Up to 50 passengers on board the train were also mostly unscathed.

Paramedics treated six people at the scene, but nobody was hospitalised.

The train had left Southern Cross Station in Melbourne and was headed to Bairnsdale.

Emergency services helped passengers leave the train before they were helped onto coaches to finish their journey.

The cause of the collision is yet to be determined, and an investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with dashcam footage from the incident has been urged to come forward.

Coaches will replace trains between Traralgon and Bairbsdale for several hours.

"We thank passengers for their patience while we work to get them to their destination as quickly and safely as possible following an incident at a crossing near Kilmany," a V/Line spokesperson said.

"Safety is our priority and we will work with the relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision."

The office of the National Rail Safety Regulator and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau have been notified.

Crews are standing by to assess and repair any damage to the train and rail infrastructure.
