Queensland killer drivers spend an average five years behind bars

Queenslanders sentenced for dangerous driving causing death are being handed an average of five years behind bars, according to new figures. 

And some of them are serving less than a year. 

The Queensland Sentencing Advisory Committee examined 363 cases - compiled from court cases between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2017.

It found a third of those convicted were affected by drugs or alcohol behind the wheel. 

"This is a crime that can affect anyone, so its not a crime like many others that have socio-economic factors that contribute to why people commit offences," Council chair John Robertson said. 

Dangerous driving causing death without aggravating factors, including intoxication, excessive speed, fleeing the scene or drag racing, carries a maximum of 10 years behind bars. 

The maximum penalty rises to 14 years jail if the offence is aggravated. 

Brisbane woman Tori Poll lost her best friend last year, when 19-year-old Danica Fullerton was hit and dragged by a drunk driver at a crossing in Caboolture.

The driver was sentenced to 5.5 years behind bars, but could be released on parole in 2020.

She told 9News the figures are disappointing and sad. 

"There's no justice. He gets out in two years and continues his life, when we've lost someone like a daughter, or sister, or best friend... we're all struggling with that.

"Don't drink drive...if you're doing it you're putting someone else's life at risk."
