How Sydney woman, 74, escaped after allegedly being kidnapped from own home

An elderly woman from Sydney's south-west has described how she escaped from a man who allegedly kidnapped her at knifepoint in her own home.

Maria, 74, answered the door of her Kemps Creek property to a man at 1pm on February 4.

She claims he asked to use her phone, but when she went to grab it, he forced his way in and demanded money.

She told him she didn't have any, and he then allegedly took two gold necklaces from her at knifepoint before demanding her car keys.

Maria said she thought the man was going to kill her.

"I did say in my mind, 'tonight I'll be on TV dead'," she told 9News.

The man then allegedly forced Maria to get in the passenger seat of her own car and drove her around on a series of errands, including to a pharmacy where he allegedly locked her in the car and later injected himself with something.

Maria made her escape when the man left the keys in the car on Elizabeth Drive in the city.

"I was very happy I had that chance. I was happy to come to my place in one piece," she said.

"It's really, really sad that a man can do that."

A 49-year-old man will face court today over the alleged kidnapping, as well as a separate aggravated robbery.

In this second alleged attack, a 60-year-old woman was walking home on Castlereagh Street in Liverpool last Tuesday when she was allegedly assaulted by a man who grabbed her handbag.

She was left with a fractured eye socket, and the man dropped the bag and fled.

Ross Carmino, 49, was denied bail when he appeared in court today over the alleged kidnapping, as well as a separate aggravated robbery.

In the second alleged attack, a 60-year-old woman was walking home on Castlereagh Street in Liverpool last Tuesday when she was allegedly assaulted by a man who grabbed her handbag.

Mr Carmino will be back in court in April.
