Kia recalls more than 57,000 cars, urges owners not to park in garages due to fire risk

Kia is recalling more than 57,000 vehicles after it was discovered a fault with an onboard computer could cause a fire in the engine bay even when the vehicle is switched off.

The recall affects 56,203 Kia QL Sportage vehicles made between 2016 and 2021, and 1,648 Kia CK Stinger vehicles made between 2017 and 2019.

Kia has recommended that until repairs have been made, all affected owners should not park their vehicle near any "flammable structures" or in enclosed areas like a garage.

"If an electrical short circuit occurs, this could result in an engine compartment fire when the key is switched off and the vehicle is parked," the recall states.

"A vehicle fire could increase the risk injury or death to vehicle occupants or bystanders and/or damage to property."

The automaker reports that the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) can remain live even when the vehicle is switched off.

If moisture enters the HECU, a short circuit could occur and create a fire in the engine compartment.

The HECU is responsible for the vehicle's Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Stability Control System and Traction Control System.

Kia Australia is contacting all known owners of the affected cars by mail.

Consumers are being asked to contact their nearest Kia Australia dealer to arrange for an inspection and repair of the vehicle, free of charge.
