Family’s saviour speaks out after murder-suicide

The man who saved his neighbour's life during a shooting rampage leading to a murder-suicide in north Victoria has spoken about his ordeal.

It comes as family friends speak of the gunman who shot his girlfriend then himself.

Friends have described Greg Murray as a character, a competitive footy player and a good bloke.

They can't understand why he ended his life and took another.

Murrabit resident Gordon Yard lived next door to Murray for thirty years.

The remote property became a crime scene yesterday after Murray shot himself and murdered his girlfriend.

“He’s an easygoing sort of bloke,” Mr Yard said.

“Like everybody else, we are all shocked.”

Local detectives are now leading the investigation into the murder suicide.

However, the tragedy inflicted by Murray could have been much worse.

Hours earlier, Ken Byrne in Kerang ran to his neighbour’s home where Murray had shot both his ex-wife and her new husband Dave.

Mr Byrne wrestled with Murray, who was trying to choke his ex-wife’s new partner while six children watched on.

“One was screaming and the other two were just laying there,” Mr Byrne said.

“One was staring at the roof, he was petrified.

“I just grabbed (Murray) and threw him onto the lawn.

“He got up, ran over to his ute and took off.”

Today Dave’s family returned to the home, thanking the community for their support.

Police say it's unclear whether Murray murdered his girlfriend at the family property before or after the shooting in Kerang.

It is understood they had been dating for about 12 months and the daycare worker had two children of her own.

Police have notified the Swan Hill woman's family.

But though the crime scene has been cleared, the devastated town has a long road ahead.
