‘I’m just happy to have a gig’: Ken Sutcliffe receives lifetime achievement award from Australian Sports Commission

9NEWS reporter Ken Sutcliffe's decades of dedication to sports journalism were recognised when the Australian Sports Commission presented him with a Lifetime Achievement award overnight.

The ASC Media Awards were presented last night in Sydney, with Sutcliffe's recognition one of the highlights of the event.

Sutcliffe has worked in broadcasting for 49 years, 36 of those with the Nine Network.

Despite his status as an icon, Sutcliffe accepted his award with typical humility.

"I'm just happy to have a gig, I really am," he said.

"Usually at these sort of things, I'm MC-ing it and not getting a lot."

He thanked his wife Anne, with whom he has been married for 45 years.

Sutcliffe also spoke of his gratitude for the opportunities he had received in his stellar career.

"It's way beyond whatever I thought I was able to achieve," he said.

He praised the younger generation of sports reporters coming through, making particular note of the amount of young women now choosing it as a career.

"I love working with them, it keeps me young," he said.
