Katter courting ex-One Nation senator

A senator who quit One Nation the day he was sworn in to the upper house has dismissed speculation he'll join Queensland maverick MP Bob Katter's party.

Fraser Anning cut himself loose from Pauline Hanson's party to sit as an independent on the Senate crossbench in November.

He replaced Malcolm Roberts in the Senate after he was caught up in the dual citizenship saga.

Senator Anning said he was still in the process of officially quitting One Nation, and was happy being an independent for now.

"I'll keep my options open for down the track," Senator Anning told Sky News, adding he'd been friends with Mr Katter for 40 years.

Senator Anning will dine with Mr Katter, who holds the lower house seat of Kennedy in north Queensland, on Thursday night in Brisbane.

Mr Katter declined to comment about the senator's future.

"You'll have to speak to him," Mr Katter told AAP.

He said the pair have a lot in common, including owning cattle stations and having pictures of the late Joh Bjelke-Petersen, former Queensland premier, on their walls.

"We're good friends going way back," he said.

"I'd absolutely love Fraser to join our party. He would be an asset."

Katter's Australia Party picked up three Queensland seats at last year's state election.
