Karmichael Hunt gets slap on the wrist from magistrate as cocaine possession charge is dropped

'Relieved' former Wallaby Karmichael Hunt will be hoping he can return to the sport after having a charge of cocaine possession dropped.

No evidence was offered today in court and a conviction was not recorded.

Hunt, 31, was hit with a $600 fine after pleading guilty to possessing prescription drug Xanex and failing to provide police with his fingerprints within a certain timeframe.

The rugby star was charged in Fortitude Valley on December 30 with two counts of pleasing a dangerous drug and another of contravene a police direction, relating to an allegation he failed to give police his ID.

Hunt's movements overseas will not now be restricted and his lawyer Adam Magill said outside court his client was "relieved".

However, the Magistrate, Barry Cosgrove, told him as a person in the public eye Hunt had to be like "Caesar’s wife - beyond reproach".

Hunt did not comment when he left court.

After playing a number of comeback games for Australia in 2017, Hunt voluntarily stood down from his duties with Rugby Australia and Queensland Reds while matters went through court.

Rugby Australia is understood to be releasing a statement on his playing future soon.

Hunt will be hopeful of playing for the Wallabies for the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan.

Mr Magill said: "I think it’s crucial for anyone who has the opportunity to travel OS we don’t know what he’s going to be doing of course any recorded conviction can stifle that that was the purpose of my submission."

"It's been very stressful for him and his family it’s been hanging over his head for a few weeks and it’s put to bed now which is great."

He said the future was "unknown" but he would be discussing his options with his manager.
