'I could do that job': Karl Stefanovic puts his hand up for Australian cricket team selector role

Australia’s calamitous Ashes campaign has ended the Test careers of veterans Ryan Harris and Michael Clarke, but could it have launched one for a new national team selector?

TODAY Show host Karl Stefanovic – celebrating his 41^st birthday today – has put his hand up to take the reins of the side after the coveted urn was relinquished to England.

“The selectors need to take responsibility here too,” Stefanovic said as the panel discussed the fallout from the series.

“I think Peter Siddle should have been in the side since day one, bowling little outies in English conditions would have worked.

“Not that I’m making a run for it…”

Co-host Lisa Wilkinson gently reminded viewers of her colleague’s purported prowess with the bat as a Queensland schoolboy, at which point Stefanovic came clean.

“I reckon I could do that job,” he joked.

His comments came after Cricket Australia’s high performance team manager Pat Howard admitted his job should come under scrutiny.

Mr Howard took personal responsibility for the heavy workload which lead to Harris’s breakdown as well as the decision to select a joint squad for the West Indies and Ashes tours .

The final Ashes Test begins at The Oval on August 20.
