Kangaroo torture accused faces court over alleged animal cruelty charges

Four men accused of torturing and killing two kangaroos have appeared in Joondalup court in Western Australia.

Dylan Leslie Griffin is one of four men charged with animal cruelty over the incidents, which were captured on video.

Police allege on May 19, 22-year-old Griffin shot a kangaroo in the eye after the some of the co-accused chased it down and stabbed it.

Some are also accused of burning and kicking the same animal.

Another kangaroo was allegedly stabbed 20 times.

Police also alleged Luke Dempster tortured an adult chicken by placing it on a fire fuelled by accelerant. A small explosive device then detonated - injuring the bird. 

9NEWS understands police tracked the men down after arresting Dempster over a spate of shootings with a gel-pellet gun in Craigie.

It was then that they discovered the videos on a mobile phone. 

Griffin, who sported a black eye during the appearance, was granted bail, despite police opposing the application.

They unsuccessfully argued he was a risk to community safety because of the firearm, knuckle duster and knife used in the kangaroo attack. 

Griffin also denied police claims he's a member of an outlaw motorcycle gang. 

He was released on a $10,000 surety, to reappear on October 15.

Dempster is expected to reappear in court on October 26, while Ricky Swan and Ben Malpuss - who also faced court today - will reappear on October 17 and 5 respectively.
