Judge us on federal policies: Bishop

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop doesn't expect the Barnett government's unpopularity to risk key West Australian seats in the federal election.

Ms Bishop says voters understand the difference between state and federal governments and she believes they'll judge the national team on their merits.

"This is a federal election and there are federal issues that are being dealt with federal policies," Ms Bishop told reporters.

Ms Bishop said she looked forward to campaigning with Premier Colin Barnett in the near future.

She also hit back at heavy criticism from WA Treasurer Mike Nahan who handed down a budget last week with a record deficit.

Mr Nahan delivered a blistering critique of his federal counterparts, spraying them for not doing enough to improve the state's GST share.

"I believe the West Australian members and senators in Canberra have worked very closely with the state government and most certainly with our own treasurer to make sure Western Australia gets its fair share," Ms Bishop said.
