Joyce questions economics of Chinese mine

Federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce has questioned the economics of the controversial Watermark coal mine going ahead in his NSW electorate on prime farming land.

The go-ahead for Chinese-owned Shenhua mine now lies with the NSW state government, but Mr Joyce wonders why it would make an investment of hundreds of millions of dollars when coal is just $60 per tonne and it would be cheaper to buy an existing mine.

"Economics is going to be a big player in this debate going forward," Mr Joyce told Sky News.
