Joyce dampens rumour Christensen will walk

Barnaby Joyce has moved to quiet rumours his colleague George Christensen will quit the coalition if Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull isn't removed from the helm.

It was previously reported a coalition MP would quit if Mr Turnbull remained as leader, but the outspoken Queensland Liberal National member was named by News Corp on Saturday as the MP.

Mr Joyce, speaking on election day in his home region of New England, said Mr Christensen would remain in the Nationals.

Mr Joyce threw his support behind Mr Turnbull and urged his colleagues to do the same to help the prime pinister do a good job for the nation.

"He's got a tough job and when people have a tough job and put your shoulder to their wheel," he told reporters.

It was the second time in as many days Mr Joyce has been forced to fend off criticism directed at Mr Turnbull, reportedly from within his own party.

"I'll be back tomorrow," he said when asked if he had a message for agitators within his party.
