Barnaby Joyce could be officially back in parliament by Wednesday afternoon.

The results of last weekend's New England by-election will be officially declared by the Australian Electoral Commission at midday, and the writ is expected to be returned shortly after.

With a more than 12 per cent swing, Mr Joyce scooped up 65 per cent of the vote compared to Labor candidate David Ewing's 11 per cent.

Mr Joyce returned to parliament earlier this week, signed in as a visitor, and was greeted by a standing ovation in a National partyroom meeting.

The by-election was the result of a High Court ruling in October that Mr Joyce was a New Zealand citizen and therefore ineligible as an MP.

He has since renounced that citizenship.
