Johnston welcomes US defence review

Defence Minister David Johnston has welcomed ongoing United States commitment to the Asia-Pacific and training of US forces on Australian territory.

Senator Johnston said the US 2014 Quadrennial Defense Review indicated the US would maintain an active presence in the region and its regional alliances and partnerships despite tough financial times.

He said the government would consider choices the US was making in the QDR when developing the new Defence White Paper to be released next year.

QDR is a four-yearly review of US defence strategy and priorities.

The latest sees allied nations playing a greater role when partnering with US troops deployed abroad, as well as forward deploying navy ships and rotating ground forces in and out of overseas bases.

Senator Johnston said Australia and the US were committed to implementing force posture initiatives in northern Australia.

Starting in April, the US will deploy 1150 Marines, with equipment, vehicles and aircraft, for a six-month deployment into northern Australian.

"This is a practical demonstration of Australia's commitment to supporting US engagement in our region," he said.
