Former top Australian diplomat accused of attempting to groom a boy online

A former top Australian diplomat is to face court accused of attempting to groom a boy online who turned out to be an undercover police officer.

John Finnin, 63, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrate’s Court today charged with attempted grooming as well as having child abuse material on his phone.

Mr Finnin tried to apply for his phone and computer to be returned, citing a desire for an independent test of the material.

He also claimed to be unemployed, requiring his computer and phone to secure a job.

Mr Finnin’s LinkedIn account lists his prior employment as regional director Europe Middle East & Africa for the Australian Trade and Investment Commission, ALH Group and Crown Resorts.

According to the profile, Mr Finnis describes himself as “an outstanding business leader” with a “strong commitment to his personal and professional development.”
