Jellyfish warning for WA's Ningaloo Reef

Visitors to Western Australia's famed Ningaloo Reef have been warned that irukandji jellyfish may be present after several reported cases of irukandji syndrome this year.

The Department of Parks and Wildlife says all users of the marine environment must be able to recognise signs and symptoms of a sting, know first aid procedures, have a plan for gaining medical assistance and be aware of how to reduce the risk of being stung.

Irukandji jellyfish are small, transparent and often not seen, but wearing full body stinger suits or wetsuits made of nylon or lycra can reduce the likelihood of being stung, while vinegar helps treat a sting.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF AN IRUKANDJI JELLYFISH STING:

* severe generalised muscular pain

* headache

* nausea

* vomiting

* anxiety

* restlessness

* breathing difficulties

* sweating
