Mother of slain nursing student 'incandescent with rage' over disposal of body

The mother of a murdered nursing student says she is "incandescent with rage" that her daughter's body was discarded like "rubbish" in South Australia's Flinders Ranges.

Jasmeen Kaur was stalked, abducted and murdered by Tarikjot Singh in March 2021 before her body was dumped in a shallow grave more than 400 kilometres from where she was last seen leaving work.

Singh initially denied the killing but pleaded guilty before he was due to stand trial earlier this year.

Kaur's mother Rashpaul travelled from India to Australia and laid eyes on her daughter's killer for the first time while her victim impact statement was read to the court during the sentencing submissions in the case.

Her statement detailed the torment she endures at the way her "precious little girl" was killed.

The statement said her daughter's last hour on earth was filled with brutality and terror.

She said it was because Singh had tried to forcefully marry Kaur, claiming the 21-year-old refused him 100 times.

In the end, she said, her daughter was disposed of as "rubbish" and she was now "incandescent with rage" at the thought.

Kaur's brother, sister and aunt also gave victim impact statements to the court.

The rest of the sentencing submissions were adjourned while a new psychological report is ordered.

Singh will be back in court in July.
