James Packer and Mariah Carey are engaged, according to US media reports

James Packer and Mariah Carey have become engaged, according to reports on two US entertainment websites.

The billionaire Australian businessman proposed to the singer in New York City at a private dinner, TMZ reports.

Carey, 45, and Packer, 48, have been dating since June 2015 and recently rang in the New Year at Packer’s Crown casino in Melbourne.

The pair first met at a movie premiere in Aspen in 2014.

US entertainment website E! Online also reported the pair are engaged, saying the ring “came in at around 35 carats” and was "breathtaking".

Both Packer and Carey have been married twice before.

Carey was previously married to Nick Cannon and music mogul Tommy Mottola and has four-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe with Cannon.

Packer has three children from his last marriage to Erica Baxter: Indigo, 7, Jackson, 5, and Emmanuelle, 3.

He was also married to Jodhi Meares between 1999 and 2002.

Carey is due to start the third leg of her Las Vegas residency next month, before setting out on a world tour, with Packer expected to join her for most of the dates.

There has been no word yet on a wedding date.
